March 21, 2024 – Often we see companies start advertising thoughtlessly, without first determining who their target audience is and what message they want to reach them with. This can be a big mistake, because in the end, what are you achieving with your campaigns? Right, nothing!

That’s why we like to share five things you better not do when you want to start advertising. 🚀

#1: Quickly pushing sales

Just as you don’t immediately start talking about marriage on a first date, it’s also not a good idea to immediately promote your products or services while advertising.

Compare your ads to that first meeting: it’s all about building a connection by adding value. When your target audience is ready, they will naturally show interest in your offer. So step one is to inspire your target audience.

#2: Wanting to reach everyone

Marketing is all about recognition. Your target audience must be able to identify with the situation you are presenting. A generic message doesn’t really touch anyone. Therefore, it is essential to break down your target audience and focus on identifiable situations for each segment.

We applied this approach for our client, Unnamed Union. For example, young people recognized themselves in a situation where their mothers still ironed their clothes, while grandparents understand all too well the situation where they ask for help with technology. The result? Significantly higher engagement and applications.

#3: When advertising, never use your homepage as a base

Never use your home page as a destination for your ads. Consider that your target audience is viewing your ads from comfort, such as from their couch or during a lunch break. When they land on your homepage after clicking on your ad, they have to make an effort to find information. And they don’t want to take that trouble. It is therefore wise to create specific landing pages that perfectly match your ads.

#4: Staring blindly at trendy platforms

While it may be tempting to always be on the lookout for the latest social media platforms or advertising channels, it is not always the best strategy. It is important to understand where your target audience is and what platforms are most effective for your specific industry or product. Blindly investing in each new platform can lead to wasted resources and time.

#5: When advertising, you often want to tell too much in one ad

A common mistake is trying to cram too much information into one ad. This can be overwhelming and lead to a lack of focus. It is important to keep your message simple and clear, with a clear call-to-action that encourages the viewer to take action.

These don’ts will help you avoid the biggest mistakes when advertising.
